SAILORS' AT HOME.
! FUNCTION ON THE DIOMEDE. NEARLY 700 INVITATIONS. The company of H.M.S. Diomede, which is preparing for its annual summer cruise, will give a children's party and an At Home on the ship and at the Devonport naval base this afternoon. This an- " nual event has years been held in Dunedin; " A committee comprising LieutenantCommander A. W. Clarke (chairman), Petty-Officer C. Canty, Sergeant J. Bradley. Leading-Stoker A. Kellian, Shipwright C. Cotton and Leading-Signalman R. Hayter has charge of the arrangements and is assisted by a willing band of helpers. A musical programme will be given by the Diomede's Silver Band under the baton of Mr. H. Barnett and the dance band will be in attendance be- » tween 4 p.m. and 5.30 p.m.. when dancing will be held in the Harbour Board'* shed. Sports for children will be under the supervision of the ship's physical instructor and there will be numerous sideshows. Nearly 700 invitations have been issued and the visitors will have an excellent opportunity of inspecting the •warship and the. base. Admission will be by invitation card at the dockyard gate, Devonport, and boats for the Diomede will leave the Admiralty launch steps, Quay Street, at 1.15 p.m. and 1.45 p.m.
