MUNICIPAL FINANCE.

WELLINGTON'S POSITION

RECEIPTS ABOUT £7OOO DOWN. A nine-months' return of receipts compared with estimates, preparer! for the Wellington City Council by I lie city treasurer, Mr. C. Collins, was before the council's Finance Committee this week. Commenting on the return, the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said that building fees, cut down to £2OOO in the estimates, had yielded only £BO9 in the nine months, and looked like being £IOOO down for the year. One would not think that the cemetery returns would be affected by the depression, but thry also were down.

The Mayor pointed out that the receipts from the petrol tax also were flown, as compared with last year. It had been estimated that this would yield £16,800, but up to December 31 only £11,863 had been collected. The rates, of course, were the major item. There was still £203,175, out, of a. total of £508,319, to be collected on December 31. Rents were down and so were, receipts from reserves. The latter promised to be from £IOOO to £I3OO short of the estimates. Altogethn it. looked as though the, receipts would be about £7OOO down on the estimates.
