The Ottawa Economic Conference was (lie event of tho year for New Zealand, said Sir James Parr in an address today. He expressed Jiis confidenco that the conference would servo its intended purpose of promoting a gfreat extension of Imperial trade and ho urged tho paramount importance of adequate preparation for effcctivo representation of this country at the gathering. There were cracks in the Imperial structure, said Sir Juntos. Cement was needed to close and bind these, cracks. Ho suggested that the only cement- 1 hat would hold the. structure of tho Empire together was that of mutually profitable trade between all parts of tho Empire. Tho Ottawa conference would decide whether we were to mix this cement, of Empire, whether our race was to take up in tho right spirit this great heritage of one-fourth of tho globe. The opening of the Ottawa conference would be a red-letter day for New Zealand and the Empire.
