The public made Tai Ao a strong favourite for the Te Hapara Hack Handicap, and he won without much difficulty. The -winner obtained a substantial advantage from the excellent manner in which be ! was handled by the Auckland horseman H. i Wiggins. The horse left no doubt of his i superiority in the straight. Rus»et Moor went out a hot favourite in j j the t irst Hurdles, but St. Ames carried j some support also. It looked for about half ' the distance as if Russet Moor would secure ! an easy win. However, the final told a different tale and the favourite was well i beaten. St. Ames had a narrow escape from disaster at the jump in front of the stand where he showed an inclination to run down the jump, but his rider kept him going well. In a good finish, St. Ames won by two and a-half lengths, Tall Timber finishing one and a-quarter lengths ahead of Russot Mooi. The Flying Handicap provided a good finish between the Auckland horse. White Wings, and tho Gisborne-trained Toboggan, the visitor carrying off honours by a neck. Lordly Knight was well-supported for this event, but found the one stone overweight too much to carry and was three and a-half lengths back in third position. In the Hack Gold Cup, Aiguille was second favourite nnd won in a strong finish with Little Wonder, whom he beat by a ' narrow margin. Bob In participated in the finish, but was bumped" back through a collision. The stewards held an inquiry into the incident, but took no action. The Carroll Memorial Cup gave the best finish of the day. From the start, Autumn Sun and Primax shot out quickly and in the first furlong established themselves at the head of the field. Both Malahat and Valsier began to move when entering the last half-mile, but Autumn Sun and Primax met the moyo apparently with ease, and they were still in the same positions as the straight was reached. There Malahat again moved up and after a strenuous effort, got up on the outside. The three were practically level a few chains from the judge's box and Autumn Sun seemed to be done, but made a sprint / and drew out again to beat Malahat and Prima.* home in that order by a head and half-a-head respectively. Valsier was fourth and Helium fifth. SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. - . ] LIST OF ACCEPTANCES. i ! [BY TELEGRAPH. PRI'.SS ASSOCIATION. J GISBORNE. Thursday.
