COUNCIL RETIREMENTS.
OFFICERS ON LEAVE.
APPRECIATION OF SERVICES
Appreciation of the services of a. number of officers of the City Council who are retiring after lengthy periods of service was expressed in a series of resolutions adopted by the council last evening. One o/ thesq. referred to the city organist, Mr. .Ti Maughan Barnett, who has occupied his position for 19 years. "The council places on record .its appreciation of the devotion and efficiency with which he has carried out his duties during his term of office and pays tribute to his high attainments as an organist," read this resolution. "The high standard of his musical recitals and his enthusiastic conductorship of the Municipal Choir have undoubtedly done much to raise musical standards in the city." The other resolutions were in respect of Mr. C. W. Adams, for 20 years with the corporation and latterly occupying the position of property inspector; Mr. C. Wheeler, also with 20 years' service, and at bis retirement inspector of dangerous goods; and Mr. P], Bailer, the Town Hall manager, who has completed 20 years in the service of the council. The Mayor, Mr. G. TV, Hutchison, said it had been stated that several of the members of tho staff had been retired on very short notice without any provision having been made for their old ago. This was not so, for in 1922 a superannuation fund had been established, and all who wished to join were invited to do so. In 1924 the council had decided that members of the staff who were contributors to the fund would be retired on reaching the age of 65 years. It would be seen that tile position of these men was clear, but in order that there would be no hardship the council last December had made provision so that each of these members would be given three months' leave on full pay prior to the date of their retirement.
