WORK FOR TEACHERS.
TOTAL OF 21 STUDENTS. EDUCATION BOARD'S SCHEME. A decision to employ as "junior teachers" at a salary-of £3O a year the 21 probationers who could not bo admitted to the Auckland Training College this year, was made by tho Auckland Education Board yesterday. The decision will bo subject to the approval of the Education Department and tho Audit. Department. The department, in reply to inquiries by the hoard, stated that the Otago Education Board was retaining for a second year a number of last year's probationers who were not accepted for admission to tho Dunedin Training College, and was making in each case a nominal payment of £lO from the board's general fund. The department, while offering no objection to the scheme, had made it clear that tho teachers could not bo called probationers, but could bo known as "junior teachers." They were to be given no understanding that they would be admitted to tho Training College next year. Tho chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said tho excellent example of the Otago Board had been brought to his notice by l\fr. T. IJ. Wells, a member of the Auckland Board. The board should adopt a similar scheme, a s it could thus givo, at a low cost, another year's training . to the unfortunate 21 students. The salary of £3O would represent 15s for each working week.
The department advised that the grading marks of teachers who were unemployed or only partly-employed last year would bo increased by four under the headings, of teaching, personality and organisation.
