BRITISH TARIFF.
NEWSPAPER FORECAST.
GESTURE TO DOMINIONS,
(Received February 3, .11.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 3
The Daily Express says it understands that the Government will announce in the House of Commons on Thursday:— fl) A general 10 per cent, tariff on all foreign imports, except a few selected raw materials and s<".me foodstuffs. (2) The free entry of all Dominion and colonial imports.
'lhe paper says Ihursdav will be the greatest day of Empire jubilation since 1918. It suggests that the next move rests with the Dominions and colonies, which should try to match Britain's historic gesture and should impose a 10 per cent, tariff on foreign imports and grant Dominions' goods preference. Also it says the Dominions might gracefully adjust their preferential tariffs to the same degree.
The President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter Punciman, in answer to a question in the House of Commons, said there had been no negotiations aiming at tariff bargains with any foreign country.
