MOTORISTS BEFORE COURT.

DRIVER WITHOUT LICENCE. A PENALTY OF £lO IMPOSED. " There is more in this case than would at first appear," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly in the Police Court yesterday, when Carl B. Herforth was charged with driving a motor-car without having a driver's licence. Mr. Kelly said last year defendant was convicted for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-vehicle and his licence was cancelled for six months. Constable Wood had heard that defendant had been driving his car before the six months had expired, and on January 12 the constable saw him at the wheel. Counsel said that for five months after having had his licence cancelled defendant had employed a man to drive his car, and negotiations were in progress to see if he could be allowed to drive before t hesix months had expired. Before anything had been finalised, however, defendant had used his car. Defendant was fined £lO. in default one month's imprisonment. lie was allowed 24 hours to pay. Four young men. described by the police as " speed fiends." were each fined £1 and costs for riding motor-cycles without lights. 'Mr. Kelly said the riders had been speeding along a concrete road in the suburbs.
