OYSTERS IN THE SOUTH.
PROFITABLE INDUSTRY. For over 60 years the Foveaux Strait oyster industry has been both a natur.fl heritage to and an always increasing source of considerable profit to Bluff, and, indirectly, to Invercargill. Several Bluff oyster merchants export large quantities to both Melbourne and Sydney, as well as all parts of New Zealand, and, although during the last couple of years the Australian trade has somewhat diminished, it is anticipated that this season's demand will show a considerable improvemen upon that of last year. With each year the consumption of the oysters is on the increase, and notwithstanding that every year thousands and thousands of sacks are garnered from the Straits, there does not appear to be any appreciable diminution in the source of supply. The industry gives employment to over 70 ovstermen.
