WEALTH FROM LAND.
MANY-SIDED FARMING. ENCOURAGEMENT AT SHOW. Recognising that the first step toward national prosperity is the full utilisation of all the resources of the land, tho Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association has set itself out this year to focus attention on some of the many means by which this may be accomplished. In Auckland, where dairying is the chief of the primary industries, there aro other sources of wealth which may be tapped in conjunction with the production of milk for butter and cheese. The first of these is the production of pigs, and to encourage this side of farming the association, at its show on February 26 and 27, is awarding prizemoney which is a record for New Zealand. One class is for the best pig for bacon purposes, the pigs to be judged alive on the ground when awards will be made. They are then to be killed and cured on behalf of the exhibitors and displayed in the Auckland winter exhibition, where further substantial awards will be made for the best bacon and hams. Another class is devoted to the best porker for the London market, the entries to be killed and frozen and sent to Smithfield, where they will be judged and sold.
The association has gone out, of its way to make the show both instructive and attractive to city and country alike and has incorporated all the features which have made for successful shows in the past. Entries for the livestock sections close on February 12 and for the other sections to-morrow.
