GAVE LIFE FOR FRIEND.
MAN'S DEATH BY DROWNING. INQUEST AT CHRISTCHURCH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PBESS ASSOCIATION. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. A verdict that death was due to drowning in an attempt to save the life of his friend was returned afc the adjourned inquest t,o-day into the death of Thomas Hugh Erie Monro, manager of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company. Evidence was given that Monro's brother-in-law, J. D. Simpson, got into difficulties and Monro had gone to his assistance after despatching a boy for help. ' The coroner, Mr. E. D. Mosley, remarked that it may be some consolation to relatives and friends that Monro lost his life in an endeavour to save the life of Simpson. Being only a moderate swimmer, he knew he was risking his life, yet he did not hesitate to go to his friend's assistance. DROWNED IN A POOL. PATE OF YOUNG BOY. [BY TELEGRAPH.-»PBESS ASSOCIATION.] OAMARTT, "Wednesday. Peter Smith, aged eight years, was accidentally drowned in a pool at the Waitald hydro-electric works at 1.30 p.m. to-day. An inquest, will be held.
