OAK TREES.
Sir, —There is an oak tree at Karaka, near the second concrete bridge, planted by my grandfather about 1860 or earlier, as far as I can ascertain. The trunk is short, only about sft. to the main branches. The circumference mid-way between (he two bulges and at about tho smallest, part is 12ft. 4in., the height about 60ft. The tree is past its prime. So are a thuja gigantea and a pinus insignia in the same enclosure, apparently about the same age. A eucalyptus pilularis, planted there apparently about the same time, seems to be still in its prime. At sft. from the ground I measured its circumference 14ft. 2in. H. E. Glasson.
