TENNIS TOURNEY.
PLAY COMMENCING TO-DAY. MATCH FOR WILDING SHIELD. AUCKLAND PLAYS CANTERBURY. Interprovincial tennis will begin in earnest to-day at the Stanley Street courts with the commencement of the semi-final round of the Wilding Shield competition. The match will commence at 1 p.m., the following being the draw, Auckland players mentioned first in each instance:— 1 p.m.—Bartleet v. Angas and Morrison v. Glanville. 2.15 p.m.—Stedman v. Barnett and Sturt v. Patterson. 3.45 p.m.—Stedman and Sturt v. Glanville and Patterson, Bartleet and Morrison and Angas and Barnett. Both teams practised at Stanley Street yesterday afternoon. The Canterbury players exhibited remarkable steadiness after a weary train journey, and their manager, Mr. P. R. Harman, seemed well satisfied with the try-out. The Auckland team practised later and some fast driving was witnessed. Both teams should be* at the top of their form to-day. The match will be continued tomorrow. The final round will be staged on Saturday and Monday, when the winner of the Auckland-Canterbury match will meet Wellington. Australian Visitors. The Australian ladies will arrive by the first express this morning. The team comprises Mrs. Molesworth, Misses N. Valkenburg, N. Hall, J. Hartigan and N. Lloyd. They will commence the test match against the New Zealand ladies' team (Mrs. H. M. Dykes. Misses D. Nicholls, Marjorie Macfarlane, B. M. Knight) on Saturday. Miss Macfarlane has been appointed captain of the New Zealand team, which will pair as follows: —Mrs. Dykes and Miss Knight, Miss Macfarlane and Miss Nicholls. The last day's play of the Wilding Shield and the last day of the ladies' test match will be played on Monday, when the championships will commence, and will be continued during the week. The Nunneley Casket match between Wellington and Auckland will be played next week and possibly Monday, February 1. The teams will be: — Wellington.—Miss D. Nicholls, Mrs. H. M. Dykes, Miss D. Howe, Mrs. D. G. France. Auckland.—Misses Marjorie Macfarlane, B. M. Knight, J. Ramsay, Mrs. E. Napier. Condition of Courts. Miss Dulcie Nicholls arrived yesterday. Mr. G. N. Goldie, formerly secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, and his wife will arrive to-day for the carnival. Other well-known tennis enthusiasts already here are Mr. F. 0. Austin (auditor of the Now Zealand Lawn Tennis Association), and his wife (formerly Miss C. Stevens, a Wellington provincial champion). Mr. D. M. Kean, the New Zealand secretary, arrives to-day, and the Wellington shield team is due tomorrow. The visiting teams will be the guests of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association at tea at the rooms of Messrs. Milne and Choyce, Limited, this morning. Arrangements for the tournament and competitions are well in hand. The courts have quite recovered from the heavy treatment in the Auckland championships. Th© catering will again be in the able hands of the ladies of the following senior clubs:—Royal Oak. Parnell, Remuera, University, Campbell Park and Eden and Epsom. This is the first time such catering has been attempted at a New Zealand championship meeting in Auckland and the innovation should prove as popular as it has done at the last two Auckland championship meetings.
