MR. JOHN COURT.
86th BIRTHDAY TO-DAY, FRIEND OF THE CHILDREN. One of Auckland's most respected citizens, Mr. John Court, will celebrate his 86th birthday to day. Born in Worcester-, shire in 1846, Mr. Court arrived in Auckland in 1889 to join his three brothers in the drapery business which they had established some three years earlier. Tn due course he founded the well-known house of John Court, Limited, Queen Street, from the active control of which he retired a number of years ago. Mr. Court is justly esteemed for his services to the city as a councillor and deputy-mayor, and for his benefactions to the children of Auckland, for whom ha provided the playground in Victoria Park. He Blso purchased for the Zoo its first elephant, Jamuna, upon which thousands of youngsters have taken rides.- -- - - Mr. Court's birthday is always marked by a family gathering in the evening at his home in Hamilton Road, Herhn Bay, and it, is expected that on this occasion fully 30 of his near relatives ai;d descendants, who include four great-grand-children, will be present. There will b» a birthday cake with 86 candles upon it. Mr. Court continues to enjoy very good health, and finds much pleasure in motoring and a game of bridge.
