Dec. 29. Severe fighting broke out between the Cliine.se ami Japanese at I'arislian, Southern Manchuria, this morning. The Japanese contend that (he action was necessary owing lo the Chinese massing their forces. Apparently <lie intention was to attack 1 Isinrnin, though really it. is believed the Japanese intend to capture Kowpangtze as a preliminary to moving toward Chinchow. The Japanese under General '1 anion began the offensive early in the morning, engaging an armoured train in the vicinity of Panshati, which ultimately was completely destroyed by aeroplane bombing. j It. is reported that the fighting generally j is proceeding in favour of the Japanese, j but details are not available. ADVANCE ON CHINCHOW.j CHINESE NATION STIRRED. A CRITICAL SITUATION. SHANGHAI. Dec. 2S. It is unofficially reported that Japanese military headquarters have already been established within 50 miles of Chinchow. The eyes of the entire Chinese nation are turned on that city and momentous developments are expected to follow its capture. The, Japanese seem to be determined to push the Chinese across the Great Wall. It is reported that Chinese Buddhists have telegraphed to the Nanking Government offering their services in a military capacity. Jt is .estimated that there are 800.000 Buddhist monks, throughout the country and possibly 200,000 of them are fit for active service.
