DROWNED IN RIVER.
FATE OF YOUNG MAORI. SWIMMING ACROSS WAIKATO. [FROM Ot'R OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HA MILT OX. Tuesday.. A Maori farm labourer, Tom Ngalia, married, aged 24, of Ohinewai West, was drowned on Sunday afternoon while swimming across the Waikato River at a point about miles south of Rangiriri. Ngalia, in company with two young Maoris, Jack Tumai and Percy Dickson, started swimming from the west fide of the river, which is about seven chains wide. The current in the channel was very swift and Tumai gave up the attempt and returned to the bank. When near tho. east side Ngalia called to Dickson for help, but the latter was exhausted and only gained the bank with extreme difficulty. Ngalia sank before his wife, who was bathing on the west- side, and other Maoris could reach him in canoes. - Tho Iluntly police dragged the river yesterday for the body, but without success. The water is about 14ft. deep a 1 the scene of the' fatality. .
