GAMING OFFENCES.
TWO MEN FINED £5 EACH. Fines were imposed by Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., on two men who appeared in tlie Police Court yesterday charged with using premises as common gaming houses on December 28. The men, who admitted the offences, were arrested by Detectives Nalder and Bowman as a result of raids. Edward Cuthbertson, aged 45, billiards room proprietor, who was charged in regard to premises at 143, Broadway, Newmarket, was stated by Detective Nalder not to havo been in a considerable way of business. On the day of the arrest, the largest bet taken was 10s. Counsel for accused said that Cuthbertson had had difficulty in meeting the expenses of his premises. '] lie second man. Bernard Augustus Miskell, aged 50, bricklayer, was charged in regard to premises at*33, Matai Road, Green Lane. The police stated that Miskell had not taken a big part in bookmaking. Mr. Cutten fined each man £5 and allowed 14 days In which to find the amount of the penalty.
