SPEED RECORD ATTEMPT. MACHINE BURSTS INTO FLAMES. (Received December (3. 5.5 p.m.) DETROIT, Dec. 5. An airman, Lowell R. Bayles, of Springfield, Massachusetts, was killed to-day when his aeroplane struck the ground and burst into flames while he was making an attempt on the world's air speed record for a land machine. A. few days ago he attained a speed of 281.9 miies an hour.
