DOMINION'S WARSHIPS.

FIRING PRACTICE IN GULF. DIOMEDE RETURNS THIS WEEK. After undergoing extensive refitting at Auckland, 11.M.5. Veronica is to leave this morning for the Hauraki Gulf to carry out exercises in conjunction with the cruiser Diomede and the war sloop Laburnum. The Diomede will carry out firing this morning with anti-aircraft sub-calibre (two-pounder), 6in. sub-calibre (threepounder), and pompom (two-pounder) guns. This afternoon there will be 6in. sub-calibre (lin. aiming rifle) practice. To-morrow morning the cruiser will continue anti-aircraft gunnery practice and in tho afternoon sho will proceed with torpedo firing and 6in. sub-calibre firing. On Wednesday 6in.> full-calibre and torpedo firing will be carried out- from 9.30 a.m. Later in tho day the Diomede will come to Auckland after an absence of over two months, during which time she made an extended cruise to Southern ports. 11.M.5. Veronica will continue in tho gulf carrying out exercises until DeJember 23, when sho will return to Auckland, remaining in port until January 11. 11.M.5. Laburnum, which has been in the gulf since November 30, will return to Auckland c|i Friday and will remain here until December 21, when teho will leave for Whangarei and Port Fitzroy. She will return to Auckland on January 22.
