some: historic relics. THE CLOCK IN THE BELFRY. A number of interesting gifts and relics, deposited in the new buildings of St. Stephen's School at Bombay, were viewed by the visitors who attended the opening ceremony on Saturday. Chiefly conspicuous was the clock in the belfry of the main building. This was the gift of a well-wisher of the school, who insists that he shall remain anonymous. In the courtyard is a drinking fountain, the gift of the contractor, Mr. T. Clements, of Otahuhu, and his workmen. handsome copper jardinieres, given by Mr. J. Ashcroft, foreman plumber, attracted attention on the platform in the assembly hall during the dedication service. Hanging on the walls of the hall wero five water colour paintings of tho demolished buildings in Parnell, the work of Mr. Cianleigh Barton, of Christchurch. Other pictures included photographs of the historic oak trees planted by Bishop Selwyn on the old Parnell site and tho heavy front door by which the bishop was wont to enter and leave the headmaster's !louse. This door has been preserved and it is hoped to fit it into the entrance of the new chapel which it is proposed to erect among the buildings at Bombay. Other objects of interest "were the communion chalice and paten presented to tho school by the residents of Parnell to mark the. esteem in which the Maori boys were held. Tl.ey have interesting associations, as they were presented to Archdeacon Ca!dcr when lie was ordained in 1878, having been in use 10 years previously in a Derbyshire church. Mr. Calder later used the in in his missionary duties in Hawaii. Residents of Parnell also were tho donors of a framed portrait of the King and Queen, which hangs in the assembly ball, and in regular use arc six dozen hymn and prayer books presented by Miss A. E. Lodge, of Parnell.
