The outstanding foaturo of the opening day of the Wellington provincial golf championship tournament on the Ilutt links to-day was a brilliant round of 72 by A. J. Shaw, the New Zealand open champion. Shaw went out in 35 and home in .37, .hitting a long ball off the tees. This was good enough to win him tho first prize in tho professional bogey match, his card showing 3 up. Shav," did not faro so well in the. medal match in the afternoon, in which he took 70. Tliis event resulted in a tie between A. Djko (Hull) and J. It. Galloway (Palmerston North), with a net score of 72. S. N. Fuller (New Zealand Golf Association), J. Lambio (New Plymouth |, and L. Ross camo next with 73 net. Among tho amateurs, It. A-. Wagg (IlnLt) retained tho Winter Cup with rounds of 80 and 75, 11. K. Adamson (Waiwetu) and L. Buist (Ilutt), being equal in second place with 159. 11. A. Black, tho New Zealand amateur champion, took 162, and J. Goas (Wanganui), an ex-national champion, 163. The qualifying rounds for tho amateur championships were played to-day. Match play will continue to-morrow and on Saturday.

The Wellington provincial professional chump onship over 36 holes will also be decided to-morrow. In tho draw Shaw meets Fuller.
