HORSE KNOCKED DOWN.
WOMAN MOTORIST FINED. CHARGE OF NEGLIGENCE. A married woman, Flora O'Toole, of Onehuuga, pleaded not guilty in tho Oneliunga Police Court yesterday to a charge of negligently driving a motor-car in Coronation Road, Mangore. Air. F. H. Levion, S.M.. was on tiie Bench. Sergeant Brown stated that defendant's car had knocked down a horso which was being led along the ro-ul on September 5 and the man accompanying the animal had narrowly escaped injury. Edward William King said ho had been leading tho horse, which was on the grass at the side of the road, when lie was suddenly bowled over. Me heard no warning of tho car a approach. The horso also was knocked to the ground. Corroborative evidence was given bv another witness. Defendant, in her evidence, said (he horso had shied and swerved suddenly in the path of her car. She admitted not having mounded the horn and also that just before reaching the horse she had been manipulating her headlights. " There is distinct negligence when any driver in passing tralfic or animals does not allow a sufficient margin to provide for any sudden digression." said Air. Levion. Defendant, he said, was not eulitled tn give other parlies on the road a " close shave." A tine of 20s was imposed, with 23s costs.
