I ♦ | VISIT TO TE AWAMUTU. ORAKAU PA INSPECTED. : [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Tuesday. Te Awamutu was en fete to-day to welcome the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and the Lady Bledisloe, on the oecasion of their first .official visit to the district. Accompanying Their Excellencies; were Lady Norah Jellicoe and Sir John: Hanham. Their Excellencies were met; by Mr. C. G. Downes, Mayor of Te Awamutu, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. fo:r Waitomo, and Mr. J. T. Johnson, representing the county of Waipa. A visit was paid to St. John's Anglican Church, one of the first churches built in New Zealand, and to the graveyard, where many of the old missionary and pioneers were buried. A civic reception was given Their Excellencies at tie school grounds, where the school children, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, returned soldiers and residents had assembled in large numbers. Addresses of welconi# were given by Mr. Downes and by Mr. Johnson. Hia Excellency thanked the speakers and those present for their cordial and friendly welcome. He said he was de- • lighted with the appearance of the children. He did not remember in any part of the Dominion seeing such a splendid lot. After luncheon * Their Excellencies visited Orakau Pa, where they were net by a number of natives, and settlers. His Excellency expressed keen interest in the monument which marks the site of the pa, and took photographs of it. A sf6no a:;e, a relic of the fight of Orakau on March 31 and April 1 and 2, 1864, was presented to Lord Bledisloe by a schoolgirl, Hini Makarini, who recited an appropriate welcome. The Vice-Regal party visited the VJaikeria Borstal institute and spent the evening at Waitomo Caves. They return to-morrow evening to Wellington.
