AMAZING ESCAPE.
CAR FALLS 200 FEET.
ONE OCCUPANT INJURED.
WAIHI MOTORISTS* ACCIDENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE, Saturday.
Two Waihi motorists had a marvellous escape from death to-day when their car, a three-seater, fell 200 ft. from the MotuOpotiki Road to the bottom of a gully. The occupants of the car were Dr. F. G. Barraclough and Mr. F. C. V. Clark, solicitor. Dr. Barraclough suffered cuts and bruises on the head, also severe shock. He was taken to Motu, where a medical man was sent for from Mr Clark escaped with a few abrasions. The car was badly damaged. The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. at a point on the road about 15 miles from Toatoa, on the Gisborne side of that settlement The cause of the car leaving the road is not known, but it is possible that the driver was unfamiliar with the road and failed to negotiate one of the bends. When the car came to rest at the bottom of the gully Mr. Clark climbed back to the road, where he met a with whose assistance Dr. Barraclough was carried up from the wreckage of the car. Both men were then conveyed in another car to Motu. Arrangements were made for Dr. Barraclough to be brought through to Gisborne by car this afternoon.
