POLICE COURT NEWS.
CHARGE OF PETTY THEFT. FIRST OFFENDER FINED. A charge of stealing 10s, the property of Esther Faber, was preferred against Edward Joseph Harold Lowndes, aged 25, labourer (Mr. Aekins), in the Police Court on Saturday. He pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given that on' September 10 accused undertook to pay an account on complainant's behalf and he was given 10s for tho purpose. He did not pay the debt; however, and when interviewed at the detective office on Friday evening he offered complainant £5 to let the matter drop. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, fined accused, a first offender, £2, in default seven days' imprisonment. Restitution was ordered to be made. For using obscene language in a shop in Victoria Street on Friday evening George David Cargill, aged 41, labourer, was fined £2, with the alternative of seven days in prison. On a charge of drunkenness he was convicted and discharged.
