RELIEF WORK.
Sir,—l read in your issuo of September- 23 a letter 'from a correspondent who complained having just over 25s a week from the relief work to manage on. I would like to mention my own case, which is considerably worse. I am a married man with one child. I have been used to most classes of work and am both capable and willing to do a fair day s work. Yet all I have obtained from the Labour Bureau in 11 weeks has been three days' work, when the City Council put a gang of us on for three days while the other gang were having their week off. To obtain this I have been calling practically every day since I have been unemployed. So, my return for tho 11 weeks has been 37s 6d. Out of this I had to pay 12s 6d levies, leaving me 255, or, say, an average of 2s 3d a week. If mine is a fair example of what relief work is to be obtained, I cannot understand where the money goes to. City-dw;eller.
