NEW HAMILTON BRIDGE.
APPROVAL OF DESIGN.
COST ESTIMATED AT £24,300. [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Friday. Approval of a design for a proposed bridge across the Waikato River at Hamilton at a site known as No. 1 bridge, at tho northern end of the town, was given by a conference of representatives of the Hamilton Borough Council, Waikato County Council, and Waipa County Council at Hamilton to-day. Tho Mayor of Hamilton, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, presided.
A committee appointed at tho last Meeting of the delegates reported that the Government would contribute £BOOO toward the coat, of a bridge costing £24,300 and recommended that tho balance' be found by the local bodies concerned in tho following proportions Hamilton Borough, four-ninths, £7300; Waikato County, four-ninths, , £7300; Waipa County, one-ninth, £I7OO. At tho committee's request three designs were submitted by Mr. S. W. Jones, of Messrs. Adams and Jones, bridge engineers, Wellington.
Tho engineers of tho local bodies represented were unanimous in their preference for tho first design, which provided for a reinforced concrete bridge comprising three spans of about 130 ft., and two land spans of 25ft. each. Tho foundations were mass concrete piers under tho river spans, reinforced concrete abutments, and a small reinfbrced concreto pier carrying tho land spans. A clear roadway of 20ft. was provided, and two footpaths of sft. clear. The bridge was estimated to cost £21,000, plus cost of approaches, engineering charges, and extras, which were estimated to bring tho total up to about £24,300. Ou the motion of (he Mayor tho design whs approved, and it was decided to submit (lie data secured by tho committee to the local bodies concerned for further action.
