EEL IN OHAU CHANNEL.
DISCOVERY BY MAORIS. [from our own correspondent.] EOTOKUA, Thursday. The discovery of a large 121b. eel in the Ohau channel has caused a certain elemunt of consternation among tho older Maoris in the district, who regard this unusual discovery as a portent of ill omen. With the exception of Lake Tarawera, whero very large specimens aro caught, eels are practically unknown in district fishing waters, and it is stated that it is 10 to. 12 years since one of any sifce has been caught outside the lake. The eel was caught by a party of Maoris fishing in the channel for carp and was 4ft. in length. Eels destroy a largo number of trout in districts whero they aro common in the streams.
