ASCETIC AND ACTOR.
MR. GANDHI AND MR. CHAPLIN MEETING IN THE EAST END. (Received September 23, 11.15 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 23. The Indian Nationalist leader, Mr. Gandhi, and Mr. Charles Chaplin, film comedian, met at an Indian doctor's house in the East End of London. Crowds outside waited to secure their autographs. Mr. Chaplin talked at length on the use of machinery in India, to which Mr. Gandhi is opposed. The conversation was suspended by a call to prayer. Mr. Chaplin squatted beside Mr. Gandhi while the Hindu said prayers and chanted. Mr. Chaplin then left to partake of a hearty dinner, while Mr. Gandhi remained for a meal of goat's milk and orange juice.
