ELECTION OF OFFICERS. CAMPAIGN AGAINST HOARDINGS. [nT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRfSTCHURCH, Wednesday. The annual meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held to-day. It was decided to write to the firms concerned asking them to desist from defacing the countryside with hoardings and stating fh;it if this was not done the union would take action compelling them to do so. It was further decided to 09111municate with automobile associations requesting them to investigate the possibility of combating the nuisance. -An Otago vcmit seeking an amendment of the Motor Vehicles Act to increase penalties on persons convicted of driving motor-cars after their licences had been cancelled was carried. Suggested new penalties were a fine not exceeding £IOO or imprisonment not exceeding thrco months. A remit from Nelson that vehicles descending a hill should give way to traffic coming up was lo.s't by 14 votes to 13. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. F. W. Johnston; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. P. W. Breen and W. T. Hitchie; executive, Messrs. W. L. Minson, W. I>. Carey, J. L. Danks, H. C. Harlcv, F. \Y. Freeman, P. H. Parker, ,T. S. ilawkes; auditor, Mr. A. Donaldson. Messis. B. I*alck and 1 1 . \V. Freeman were elected to the directorate of the Motor Union Mutual Insurance Association. A proposal to reduce the directors' fees by 10 per cent., from £4OO to £360, was defeated.
