TE RAPA ACTIVITIES.

BUSY DAY ON TRACK. PROSPECTS OF KING FORD. SOME PROMISING HURDLERS. [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Tuesday. With n number of local horses engaged at tho Avondale meeting, the '1 e Rapa tracks bore a busy appearance this morning, but. very little fast work was attempted. "lhe course proper, with the trestles out about 2Sft... was open. The Guineas candidate. Baroscope, was restricted to easy work on the plough, 'lhe colt is-in great condition, and although Bronze Eagle and Croupier are propositions that appear rather beyond him. ho should make his presence felt in other events in the near future. King Ford, who has been galloping well at Te Rapa lately, was let off with light work this morning, being merely asked to jog around and sprint up the straight. Ho moved very freely, and it is evident that ho is in great order for his engagement in the Flying Stakes at Avondale. A good beginner, quito at home on a wet track, he must have more than an outside chance. A Promising Novice. Jlluminagh (Bentley) beat First Lap decisively over six furlongs in 1.23. Although First Lap is a notoriously bad track worker, llluminngh's effort was an encouraging one. He made a promising showing at the Pakuranga meeting, nnd under L. Everson's care has since gone on the right way. He has had a fair amount of work, nnd in tho first division of the Maiden Handicap, in which F. Bentley will ride him, should give a good account of himself. Paganelli was sent along over four furlongs, but was not after time. The sprinter, while looking bright and well, is scarcely forward enough to be seriously considered for immediate engagements. However, if the prospects of a reasonably dry track are bright, he will be sent to Auckland* on Friday. Flying Prince was not asked for a eerious effort this morning. Tinker has nim in first-class trim, however, and he should race in improved manner at the Avondale meeting. Ho claims engagements both in tho cup and the Henderson Handicap on Saturday, but it has not yet been decided in which raco to start him. Ruby Dawn Well. Tho little hurdle mare, Ruby Dawn, who ran a fair race to finish third in tho gentlemen riders' event at the Pakuranga meeting last month, has been going along tho light way at Te Rapa. She has done a fair amount of fast work recently and, as sl!o is a good beginner, she should make a respectable showing in the division race on Saturday. Critachan, who was out this morning doing pace work on the plough, bears a well-trained appearance nnd, although a race would improve his prospects, he cannot be entirely discarded in the Henderson Handicap, especially if the track is heavy. J. Canimick is to rido him. Illuminelli (McMahon) accounted for Potoa Lad (A. Gilmer) over four furlongs, the last three occupying 425. I/Allegro (N. Syme) and Palmares (McMahon) covered three furlongs in 41s, being on terms at tho finish. Cargen and C'reina's King were partnered in a duel over four flights of hurdles. Both jumped well, carrying on to completo a circuit of the course proper at a strong working pace. Cargen, who is to start in the hurdles on Saturday, has" displayed promise, although lack of experience will be against him. Domestic Trouble's Programme. Domestic Trouble was let off with pace work this morning. Slto has been acquitting herself well in her schooling tasks since her surprise win over the steeplechaso country at Te Rapa in the winter, while she ha 3 also done a fair amount of steady work over a distance. She is not engaged at Avondale on Saturday, but is scheduled to contest the hurdles on Monday, when A. P. Brady will ride her. Whakama, after schooling well over two furlongs, hit out resolutely jn a strong working gallop round to tho mile post. This mare, who is on the minimum in the hurdles on Saturday, has a fair amount of speed, and as she has been jumping well during the past few weeks, eho is quito capable of bringing off a surprise. Monetize, another hurdles candidate, was associated with Page Boy in a gallop over a circuit. The pair finished on terms, tho last seven furlongs occupying 1.43. Monetize was going strongly• at the end, nnd Fverson's charge will strip in good racing older on Saturday. TIIE TROTTING TRACK. TRAINING AT EPSOM. GOLD JACKET'S PROGRESS. The trotting trainers at Epsom who worked their horses yesterday before rain set in had tho advantage of a good dirt track, while those who worked later used the cinders.. On neither track were candidates on a time-making mission. Jewel Pointer (F. J. Smith) and Carnui (C. Smith) were companions over two circuits, with a useful brush home over the last ■•half-mile. Both pacers relished their work and Carnui hung on well in the final stages. Jacket (L. McMahon) was responsible for a pleasing effort over two miles. Ho ran the first mile at a steady clip ond on tho second improved to finish strongly. Gold Jacket is progressing favourably in his training. Win Huon (C. G. Lee) trotted very steadily over a mile and a-half. He was not bustled in the early stages, but hit out boldly when allowed to run over tho last three furlongs. Great Ballin (F. J. Smith) displayed a lot of dash when sprinting a couple of furlongs at tho end of a mile and a-half, which was negotiated at a strong pace. Great Ballin is in fino heart for imrnodiato engagements. Auto Machine (A. Broun) wos allotted long, steady work and appeared anxious to increase the speed. F. J. Smith's trotters Jock Bingeji and Carl Mack' worked separately over a mile and a-half, each giving a sound exhibition. Carl Mack went lazily in the early part, but showed fine speed when chased along over tho last few furlongs. Explosion (W. Clifton), after going away quietly from the mile and a-half peg. hit out strongly to trot faultlessly. Whon allowed to turn on tho pace from the twofurlongs post. Explosion trotted a smart quarter. Kewpie's Truimph (J. Gee) and Woodvalo (A. G. Wurnock) ran a useful milo and a-half. both pacers putting plenty of dash into their effort in the final circuit. Woodvnlo has never looked better and is working solidly. Mountain Dell (L. Mitchell) was not asked to faster than half ; speed over the major portion of three circuits, but sprinted in good style over the last couplo of furlongs. Tho mare is bearing a very bright and healthy appearance. Tumatakuru (F. J. Smith) paced resolutely over several circuits. Ho was accompanied on the last mile by Tho TriumphHarvest Home Derby enndidate (C. Smith) nnd the three-year-old did his work pleasingly. pacing evenly and at a usoful speed. Moko Girl (J. Gee) aud A 1 John (R. Saunders) worked together over a milo nnd a-half. Moko Girl trotted steadily, whilo A 1 John, who is still carrying a lot of condition, save an improved display of PU S Brncside (F. J. Smith) and Mr. Penally (C. Smith) trotted very evenly over three circuits. Neither was fully extended, but Miss Braeside, who lias coma along splendidly during tho last fortnight, gave a pleasing display for a novice. ' Dad's Ilopo (W. Clifton) revelled in a mile and" a-half task. He was under n strong pull in the early stages, but when allowed to sprint home over the last three furlongs displayed all his customary dash. TROTTING FIXTURES. Octobe.r 3--Met liven Trott ing Club.
