GALLOPS AT AVONDALE. HUNTING day works well. LADY WHIRLWIND'S SPRINT. The weather at Avondale was very cold early yesterday morning and heavy rain set in before eight o'clock and continued almost incessantly for several hours. The tracks were very fast prior to this but subsequently became dead. The plough, inside grass and the outside of the course proper, with the trestles COft. out. were available, but with one exception all the fast work was executed 011 the inside grass. The tracks received a thorough soaking and yet were in such excellent order previously that they should recover quickly unless further rain is experienced. The first to work were the two-year-olds Foreign Money and Te Waipu, who were, feut four furlongs. They rattled ofl tho first furlong in 12 2-5s and both finished strongly in 4 9 3" 55 . being 011 terms. Foreign Money moved very nicely but is still green. Te Waipu pleased by the manner in which e'.ie stuck to her task, and it looked as if she could have beaten her companion if necessary. Te Waipu is expected to run a good race in the Avondale Stakes. Autumn Sun got all the worst of tho /etart when he and Jalldy Karo jumped ofl Ht the six furlongs post, but they were soon together. The first two furlongs weje left behind 111 a smart 24 3-53. three in 375, hyo in 1.3 and the full distance in 1.16 2-5. This was a nice eSort, for both horses could have improved on the time and they were capable of doing better. Autumn Sun is to conteat the Avondale Cup. wmle Jalldy Karo is a Champion Hack Plate possibility. Emancipation was let off with a light task on the plough, this completing the prebreuktast work. Heavy ram then set in and the tracks became soft. During a. lull in the rain Hunting Day. ■Maori Boy and W'nakapara were sent five iurWgs. Hunting Day gave the other •pair a couple of lengths start but he ouickly caualit tliein and came round well on tho outside. They ran the first two furlongs in 05 2-5 a and the half-mile in 51 l-ss, completing the five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. _ Maori was a shade in front of Hunting Day «t "the finish, the pair being well clear of Whakip.ira.' The last-named was not ridden out and his disnlay was .satisfactory. Maori Boy appeared to appreciate the wet track but thehhonorsu r s of the gallop were clearly with Hnntins: Day. ' The Gisborne horse is Tery well and has evidently settled down a gord deal. " , Tarcha drew away fiom Stonehenge at the conclusion of a five furlongs sprint, the first hslf-niile taking 52 3-5s and the full distance 1.6 3-5. Tarcha won a couple of races at Gisborne recently and has apparently improved since leaving tho Waikato for the East Coa?t. .Clnremore was sent an easy mile on the ontside of the course proper but was not poing very fast until he sot to the six furlongs post. lie ran home from there in 1.27 2-5. the last half-mile occupying 59 4-ss. Jt was a useful work-out only, without 0 serious attempt against the watch, fjate in the mornins tho two-year-old Lady , Whirlwind was sent half a mile with Prince ' of Oranse and Tlo-llyholm, the latter receiving a couple of lengths start. The tjiree were soon together and were not ru.den cut to cross the line almost together in .52 2-ss, the firs_t three furlongs taking 38 4-ss. Prince of Orange is very fit and he was pulling hard all the way up the straight. Ladv Whirlwind fhaped nicely, for she could have done much better and hr>ndl"d the. wet ground in erood style. Mhe flly is apparently as good as has been thought , . . Russet M<w r (.T. was schooled t'a'ice over two hurdles, which had been erected in the home stretch. 011 the outside ' of the courSe proper. He snvc a very p.easing exhibition and he should do well as a hurdler. . Simeon, of \vh<" big things are expecWi «s a jumper, is s.ill under a cloud, but the bruised foot is reported to be yielding to treatment. Psganelli is expected to put in an appearance at Avondale on Friday. r l he majority of the other Auckland provincial horses are due on the same day. . NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE. TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP.. It. S. Rairby's rides at Avrmdale Sat- . crapy will include Catoma, Ganpat, Eaglet •nd Refresher. 11. Furlong, a three-year-old (illy by Acre from Ohui. .displayed plenty of speed in her races at Wansanui, but she did not show "inch fight, when the pressure was applied find stopped quickly each day. However, her efforts were encouraging for a novice and vlien F. Tillcy gets her right up to concert 1 itch she should have good prospects of success over short courses in minor company. After milking n good showing on the firrit otiy, Chief Cook was expected to race Prominently in the Spring Hack Handicap on the second day at Wanganui, but lie Jailed to realise expectations and was well beaten. Chief Cook is 11 long-striding horse ivho was probably iiot entirely suited by the turning course and he should be seen to Jnore advantage when he gets an opportunity 011 a more roomy track. / .A 8 8 tv.o-yenr-old last season.
