SOUTHERN CROSS' FEATS.
STORY BY KINGSFORD SMITH. PUBLICATION IN HERALD. The world-renowned feats of Kingsford Smith and his companions, in the Southern Cross, form one of the greatest of air romances in history. The story is fully told by Air-Commodore Kingsford Smith in a series of articles, the rights of which have been secured by the New Zealand Herald, the first instalment of which will appear in these columns to-morrow. The story, full of fascination and thrills, begins with the arrival in San Francisco of Kingsford Smith, Ulm and Keith Anderson in August, 1927, with the object of flying across the vast Pacific from America to Australia. Then follows the narrative of events connected with the financing of £he project, the purchase of the Southern Cross, the triumph over difficulties of divers kinds, and the perfecting of the arrangements for embarking on the great adventure. The Southern Cross flew from Oakland, California, to Australia, from Sydney to New Zealand and back, and subsequently to England from Australia, thence across the Atlantic and over the American Continent to Oakland, the original starting point, thus completing a flight round the world at about its greatest circumference. The announcement that Kingsford Smith intends shortly to attempt to lower the record for the flight from Australia to England has revived interest in the genius of this intrepid and skilful aviator. The present record is that of 8 days 21 hours 25 minutes, recently created by Mr. J. A. Mollison. Mr. Kingsford Smith, who will make his attempt in his new machine, the Southern Cross Minor, states that he expects to complete the journey on the seventh day. The rights of the publication of the story of this flight have also been secured by the Herald.
