OBITUARY.

MR. JOHN FOTHERINGHAM. WELL-KNOWN BUSINESS MAN. The death of Mr. John Fotheringham, aged 53, secretary of Taupiri Coal Mines, Limited, occurred yesterday morning. Mr. Fotheringham was found dead in bed at his residence, Kitchener Road, Takapuna. At an inquest held before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, medical evidence was given that Mr. Fotheringham had suffered from a severe attack of influenza, which left him in a very depressed stale. Tho coroner relurued a verdict that deceased committed suicide by shooting himself when temporarily deranged through illness. Mr. Fotheringham was born in Glasgow, and was tho son of Mr. Robert Fotheringham. 110 was educated in Glasgow, where he studied analytical chemistry. At the age of 24 he wont to Suva, Fiji, being employed by tho Colonial Sugar Rofming Company, Limited. After three years ho proceeded to Brazil, engaging in similar work. Mr. Fotheringham arrived iri New Zealand 23 years ago and took his accountancy degree. Shortly afterward he was appointed secretary of Taupiri Coal Mines, Limited. Mr. Fotheringham was a keen golfer, and was also interested in yachting, being a prominent member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. lie is suz'vived by his wife and orio son. Widespread regret was expressed in tho city when tho news of Mr. Fotheringham's death became known. MR. T. J. UNDERWOOD. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] MATAMATA, Thursday. The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. T. J. Underwood, public accountant, of Mutaraata. Mr. Underwood was 47 years of age arid was born at Pahnerston South. Following service with the Public Works Department at Rotoruu, he served for two years in the Medical Corps during tho war. He had lived in Matamata since tho war. He was the first secretary of tho Matamata branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association and was later secretary of tho Matamata Racing Club. He was a foundation member and past master of tho Matamata Lodge and a member of the Royal Arch Chapter and Rose do Croix. Mr. Underwood was prominent in football, wrestling and rowing circles in his younger days. Mrs. Underwood survives him. mrs. s. McAllister. [lit TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Thursday. The death occurred yesterday of M-s. S. McAllister a pioneer of Mangapai, aged 69 years. She was a daughter of the late Mr. William Harrison. Mrs. McAllister was a prominent Presbyterian Church worker, and the present Presbyterian Church property at Mangapai was provided through tho liberality of her family. She leaves a husband, two sons and two daughters. MR. H. B. LEPPER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday. Tho death has occurred of Mr. Harper B. Lepper, a well-known farmer and Jersey breeder of North Taranaki, aged 69. Mr. Lepper was the second son of Colonel Maxwell Lepper, who camo to New Zealand with the 86th Regiment and after being in Wellington for a time was appointed to the command of the Taranaki military settlers. Subsequently Colonel Lepper with his family settled on his military grant of 400 acres at Manutahi, tho namo of the district being later changed to Lepperton. Mr. Lepper took up farming on his father's property. He was associated with the Lepperton Co-operative Dairy Company since its inception and for over 30 years in succession was chairman of directors. Mr. Lepper for many years hud been a member of the Taranaki Hospital Board and at the time of his death was a representative of the Taranaki County Council on the board. From one end of Now Zealand to tho other Mr. Lepper was known as a breeder of pedigree Jersey cattle, and in recognition of his services to the breed had been elected a life member of tho New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association and the New Plymouth Jersey Cattle Club. _ He was a pioneer breeder of Jerseys in Taranaki. Mr. Lepper is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
