HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST. SQUALLY, WITH SHOWERS. Tho following weather forecast for 24 hours from 7 a.m. to-day was supplied by Mr. H. M. Vincent last evening:—An extensive westerly storm area occupies practically the whole of southern Australia, and extends across the southern Tasman Sea to New Zealand. An area of relatively high barometric pressure is located over tho southern Tasman Sea. This distribution of pressure indicates a continuance of the westerly typo of weather. Expect unsettled, boisterous conditions, with heavy showers in most districts, particularly in western areas. Mainly fair in places along the east coast. North-westerly winds, strong to gale, backing temporarily to south-west again, bieas rough to heavy generally, especially southward from Capo Egmont. Local outlook :—Squally, with heavy showers. Temperatures will be fairly mild temporarily, then becoming colder. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29.901 n. Midnight, - Sunday .. •• 29.65 in. Temperature in shade yesterday (to midnight)— Maximum, 63deg.; Minimum, 51deg. GOVERNMENT REPORT. Tho Government meteorologist reported last evening as follows: —The centre of a shallow cyclone crossed the northern portion of tho South Island to-day. An intense depression still covers southeastern Australia, whilo a belt of high pressure extends over the northern lasman Sea to and beyond northern New Zealand. Indications are for moderate to strong westerly winds north of Cape -Egmont and Castlepoint, light to moderate southerlies at first thence southward but freshening, westerly to northwesterly winds soon prevailing again generally. Seas rather rough on the west coast; elsewhere moderate. Increasinn- westerly to northerly winds with visinrr seas ill the. eastern Tasman Sea. The weather will be dull and misty with scattered rain, but a temporary improvement is probable to-morrow in eastern districts. RAINFALL RECORD.
