UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS.
EMPLOYMENT CRITICISED. BOARD STATES THE POSITION. Attention to the number of uncertificated teachers employed in tho Auckland education district is drawn by a correspondent, who asks why they are still employed by the Education Board. The correspondent states: "Certificated, graded and registered teachers have a tight to the positions uow held by uncertificated, ungraded and unregistered teachers. It is to he hoped that the board will show its practical sympathy toward unemployed teachers by giving them the opportunity to apply for the positions held by uncertificated teachers." Inquiry made at the board's offices yesterday showed that at present 26 uncertificated teachers and four licensed teachers are employed. It was stated that the licensed teachers were all returned soldiers, in out-of-\vay positions. As far as the uncertificated teachers wero concerned, it was stated that a certificated teacher could apply for any of their positions and they would have to be thrown open for competition. Of the number, there were two returned soldiers in grade 2 schools and two women teachers in Grade 1 schools. One woman was in a small school at a bush camp and the other lived in a district where there was no accommodation for an outside teacher. In Grade 0 schools, which have an average attendance of less than nine, there were three men and 18 women teachers. Many of these lived in the district, saving the settlers from giving the free board which otherwise would have to be provided. The remaining uncertificated teacher, a widow with children, was an assistant in a Grade 3 school.
