AUCKLAND ROTARY CLUB.

WEEKLY LUNCHEON HELD. The weekly luncheon meeting of tho Auckland Rotary Club was held yesterday in Milne and Choyce's Reception Ilall, the president, Mr. 11. T. Goldie, presiding over a good attendance of members. The president announced that a total of £1360 had been subscribed bv the Rotary Clubs of New Zealand for the assistance of tho clubs at Napier and Hastings, which had suffered losses as a result of the earthquake in February. Tlie speaker for the day was Mr. R. J. Laird, who delivered an address on "Friendship," stressing the need of a more liberal interpretation of tho term in everyday dealings. Friendship played a largo part in tho ideals of Rotary, Mr. Laird added, and it enabled the scope of service in the community to be greatly enlarged. Mr. Laird said that if selfishness could be eliminated, most of the social problems of the world would be solved. There was a great need in New Zealand at the present day of tolerance, friendship and understanding and it was through paying attention to these matters in the smaller circles of business and community life that the desired result might best bo attained. At. tho conclusion of tho address a vote of thanks was carried.
