RATES OF POSTAGE.
MINOR AMENDMENTS. SMALL NEWSPAPERS. Several alterations in detail to the scale of postal and telegraphic charges are made by Order-in-Council gazetted last. week. It is provided that the inland postage on newspapers not exceeding 3oz. in weight for each copy shall bo For newspapers over that weight the rate remains at Id for each 16oz. or fraction thereof.
The rates on Government packages within New Zealand are raised, with the
exception of the charge on books addressed to light-keepers, which may now be. sent for 2d instead of 3d a pound. Hates on books exchanged between libraries, between recognised book clubs, and between both classes of institutions and their subscribers arc now fixed at 2d a- pound lip to 51b., instead of 2d for the first pound and Id a pound for the ne:<t 41b. The secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department is empowered to decide what concerns or organisations are entitled to the benefit of these rates.
New scales of charges for tlio insurance of letters and parcels, both inland and oversea, arc gazetted. The new rates represent, a general increase in the charges. The concession on newspapers will affect only publications of small size, the average daily newspaper weighing well over o«z. a copy.
