NEW ZEALAND MADE.
A forward move in connection with the Women's Auxiliary of the Manufacturers' Association in Christchurch is the formation of an education sectiorf, which will bring the economic side of the association's work prominently before the women of New Zealand. The first meeting of this section was held last week in Clivistchurch, when an interested audietico listened to a short address given by Miss H. Iv. Lovell-Smith, secretary to lhr» Women's Auxiliary.
Some rather surprising facts were instanced in support of the campaign by the •speaker. New Zealand women, setting os'.fc lo make jelly for dinner, spent the sn!.t of £2OOO abroad for material that was manufactured in tho country. Tinned pears accounted for £65,000 and walnuts, purchased from the four points of the compass, £25,000. The subject of hosiery, however, forced tho matter home. Full £500,000 goes out of ihe country "yearly for stockings. Forty per cent, of this is for what is known as fully-fashioned hose; 60 per cent, for ordinary hose. If that 60 per cent, was kept in the country 2000 more workers could be employed. "At a low estimate," said Miss LovellSmith, " there are 2000 girls out of work in New Zealand. This is a serious matter for tho country. Unemployment won't cure itself. We've got to set to work to help euro it. One of the ways in which this can bo accomplished is by buying the goods that we can manufacture ourselves and keeping our men and women, our boys and girls, employed. The world doesn't get better just by itself. We've got to do our share.**
