NOTES ON THE JiACJNG. GOLD COUNTRY'S SUCCESS. WAH BEATS KING'S GUARD. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. Counter-attractions, such as the Winter Show and tho Taranaki-Wtliirwton Rugby match, affected the attendance at to-day's trotting meeting. Under tho circumstances, the fall in Die totalisator investments was expected and the club ofiicials were even prepared for a larger drop. The fiveshillings' tickets proved very popular. In the Trial Handicap Nyallo Silk forged his way to the front four furlong 3 from homo and led into the straight from Plain Silk, Shortly and Linella. Although Linella finished strongly she could not overhaul Nyallo Silk, but she would have been difficult to beat had alio been kept closer to the leaders in the last round. Wall refused to strike his correct gait in the Nai Nai Handicap. Great Way broke badly, but had too much pace for his opponents after ho hud appeared to bo hopelessly placed. Deceitful was in front with about '2OO yards to g<>. but Donald then brought (.!rcat Way along with a rush on the outside and just managed to win on tho post. Impromptu, who had a. good run throjignout, won the .Bollard Memorial nicely. Nettn Oro commenced badly and was last with a furlong gone. Lily Harold was the early lender and, passing the stand the Hecond time, she was still in front, with Impromptu, Mister Pointer and Grand Canyon next. Impromptu took charge three furlongs from homo and won in good style from Netta Oro, who came very fast, over tho Inst furlong to touch off Purser for second a. few yards from the post. Had she gone away correctly Nctta Oro could hardly have failed, but at the same tune Impromptu has greatly improved. Gold Country was backed down to a very short price in the Railway Handicap and had the race in safe keeping throughout. lie is a very nice pacer and is sure to tako high honours later on. Harvest Boy ran an excellent race and was second throughout. With a couple of furlongs covered m the Sharpo Handicap Raydus had charge and with a round to go held a nico advantage from Cracker, Drift Wave and Native Berry, Linella improved her position racing down the back, but struck trouble as they straightened up for home. M. Holmes, who drove Native Berry, timed his run nicely and got up to beat Raydus by a neck. King's Guard tried to win all the way in the Wilford Handicap and for tho best part of the journey looked like succeeding. However, Wall joined him half-a-mile from borne and fairly wore him down. When Hughes tried to get another ounco or two out of King's Guard ho broke and was somewhat slow in recovering, but hod no difficulty in 6ecuring second money. Great. Way finished well in third place. Tho Wellington Handicap was won bv tho favourite, Georgo Rey. who was lucky to beat Brentlight.. The latter, on .the rails, was blocked by a bunched field right to the straight. He then unwound a fast run, but it was too bite. In the last race Harvest Boy got through on tho rails in the straight and scored nicely. He was last of the bunch at the half-mile, but his lucky t run up on the rails won for him. Corrigan made every post a. winner with Arahond and was beaten, by the winner's luck in the running. Silver Do Oro ran a good race and Gold Country, ba.:k 48 yards, showed ft great turn of speed to finish fourth.
