TEACHERS PERTURBED.

"ATTACKS ON PROFESSION." THE CALL FOR ECONOMY. The opinion that the teaching profession was being singled out in an unwarranted manner in the call for a reduction in State expenditure was expressed by speakers at the annual meeting of ths Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute yesterday. The president, Mr. A. B. Fordyce, presided. The meeting was held in committee. A statement issued later revealed that the main topic of disijussion was the question of propaganda to counter what were considered to be attacks on the profession. Indignation was expressed at the " unwarrantable attacks" and attempts made to belittle the profession. It was decided to set up a committee to investigate the matter and report to the branch. It is understood that teachers are particularly concerned, regarding statements that the expenditure upon education needs drastic revision. It is alleged that these statements reflect discredit upon the teacher, making out that he is one of the most favoured of public servants. Due credit is not given to the, work of teachers, it is asserted, and the profession has become a " butt" for unjustified criticism. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. J. W. Fawcett; vice-presidents, Messrs. Fordyce and G. K. Hamilton; treasurer, Mr. W. 0. Lamb; management committee, Messrs. F. E. Blakey. C. W. Boswell, F. A. Garry, A. J. C.. Hall. R. P. C. Harrison, E. V. Hudson, J. H. Menziea, A. Murdoch, S. Walker and Misses W. M. Mansfield, E. P. Newton and E. M. Taylor. / .
