MILLIONAIRE DEAD.

EARLY DAYS IN DOMINION. LOVE FOR A MAORI MAID. LONDON, Sept. 2. The death has occurred of Mr. C. Harold Smith, aged 72, an American millionaire known as the " Carbon King," on the eve of the completion of his annual holiday. Mr. Smith went to New Zealand at the ago of 15 from London. He wandered from a timber camp, and was lost in the bush, where he lived for three days on fern roots. Ho reached a Maori encampment and fell in love with a beautiful girl, Rawhetia. When she died she gave Mr. Smith on her deathbed a greenstone talisman from her neck, which Mr. Smith had worn on his watch chain all his life.
