The story of the escape of 12 convicts from Devil's Island is related in a letter received by the relatives of a former prisoner, who was sentenced to imprisonment far 20 years for robbery. The prisoner and 11 others escaped while they were working in the jangle. JThey struggled for 15 days through dense undergrowth. They endured great hard»hips and lived on berries and were menaced by wild beasts. Eventually they reached the coast and commandeered two rowing boats. One capsized in a storm and six of the men were drowned. The others reached Veneroela, where they have hopes of obtaining Itheir freedom.
