Miss A. Davies. of Takapuna, has left for a visit to the North. Miss M. Miller, of Christchurch, is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. F. Adams, of Remuera, are staying at Hotel Mon Desir, Takapuna. Mrs. Grant Cowen returned to Auckland this week from a visit to Australia. Miss Jeari Fee, of Mountain Road, is on a visit to Mrs. L. B. Wall at Kairanga, Palmerston North. Miss Luckie has returned to Auckland from a visit to Wellington, and is staying with Miss Mowbray, Parnell Road. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Troup, who have spent the past two years in France, returned to Wellington this week, via Sydney. Among the guests staying at Hotel Cheltenham are Mrs. Gower, of Hamilton, and her son, Miss. Trovis, of Hamilton, Mr. and Mrs. Maunsell, of Masterton, and Mrs. Otway, of Auckland. Invitations have been issued by direction of Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and the Lady Bledisloe for a ball to be hold at Government House, Wellington, on Thursday, September 10. A number of debutantes will be presented to Their Excellencies. The monthly meeting of the Haeremai Club was held this week. An interesting sketch, "The New Idea," was presented by Mrs. Stratton and Miss Chalmers. The Snappy Three" gave some delightful songs, Miss Herrick a monologue and Mr. Roberts and Mr. Raymond Reine some humour, Mr. Churchhouse (baritone) and Miss Burns (soprano), songs. Dr. Buckley Turkington, president, spoke on the beauties of architecture. An At Home was given by Mrs. W. A. Alexander, of Great North Road, at her residence on Wednesday afternoon in aid of the Victoria League Mission to Seamen. Assisting Mrs. Alexander as hostess was Miss Seidcburg. Bridge, competitions and games made up the programme and the large number of ladies present thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. It is proposed to hold a series of thege afternoons in order to raise funds for the mission.

The C.E.M.S. carnival ball held in the Town Hall, Te Awamutu, on Wednesday evening was one of the most successful held this season. The hall had been beautifully decorated with foliage and purple ancl gold streamers. The confetti, streamer and balloon dances created much merriment, as also did the grand march of guests in costume. The awards were made as follows: —Most original, Miss L. Spinley, representing " the question of the moment—the public library site "; I prettiest fancy costume, Miss M. Westgate, Spanish lady; poster lady, Miss E. Clarke; poster pair. Miss J. Paterson and Mr. H. Spence. The Otahuhu branch of the United Party held a most successful bridge and "500" evening in the Kingsford Hall on Wednesday evening. Prize-winners were: Bridge, Lady Young, Mrs. Anderson, Miss L. McGee and Mrs. Lawes; "500," Mrs. Speed, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Allanson, and Mrs. Patterson. Tie hostess, Miss McGee, wore a frock of flowered chiffon. Among those present were: Lady Young, Mrs. T. Clements, Mrs. Lawes, Mrs. Parsons, Mrs. Doyle, Mrs. Allanson, Mrs. Goodwin, Mrs. White, Mrs. Pearse, Mrs. O'Toole, Mrs. Anderson. Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Ward, Mrs. Brosnahan, Mrs. O'Connell. Misses McGee, Lawes, White, Parsons, Ward, Nobbs, Mrs. Sidey. The Te Puke Hockey Club held a " hard-up" dance on Monday evening. There were many original costumes and Miss N. Ashton had much difficulty in judging them. The ladies' prize was awarded to Miss Jones and the gentlemen's to Mr. Godinagh. Music was supplied by the " South Sea Four" and extras were played by Misses Riley and Harris. Those present were:—Mesdamcs E. Hintz and Cosson, Misses Morton, Wright, Webber, Innes, Rhodes, Hicks, Riley, Wilkins, Douglas. Rvan, Collins, Hine, Jones, Butcher, F. Jones, Lichwark (2), Ashton (Auckland), Judd (Pukekohe), D. Dickey (Waiuku), Prentis, L. Harris, W. Harris. On Tuesday evening, at the League of Penwomen's rooms, an interesting address on "War Poetry and Poets of the War Period" was given by Miss U. Hutton Whitelaw. The speaker had given much painstaking research to the _ work and rescued from all-too-soon oblivion many worthy names. Prominent among war poets are Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen and Robert Nicholls, the last-named being the writer of that particularly moving poem recited at all Toe H ceremonies. A special feature of the evening was a scene from James Elroy Flecker's drama "Hassan," enacted in costume by Miss Edna Craig as Pervanch, Mr. J. Morgan as Rafi, and Miss Sheila Quinn as a guard. The annual general meeting of the Te Puke Lyceum Club was held in the club rooms on Tuesday afternoon. Thero was a largo .attendance of members. The report and balance-sheet for the previous year were confirmed and various club matters were also discussed. The election of officers for the year resulted as follows (all last year's officers being reelected): —President, Mrs. T. P. Lemon; vice-president, Mrs. H. A. Vercoe; committee, Mesdames J. Ball, M. Hickson, I. Vercoe, T. H. Wilsone, F. H. Wilkie and G. T. Simpson; joint secretaries, Mesdames Gibbings and Booker. A bridge committee was formed and those elected were Mesdames Randell, Webster and Miss Bush. The meeting closed with afternoon tea. A pleasant bridge and "500" afternoon was held at the residence of E. Patton, of Portage Road, Otahuhu, in aid of the Croquet Club. The rooms were decorated with sweet peas and anemones. Mrs. Patton received in black silk marocain frock and bridge coat. Among the guests were Mrs. Jury and Miss McClymont (Auckland), Mesdames Bennett, Aitken, McKelvic, Ekett, Poulton and Gollon (Ellerslie), Moffit, Gillies, Pal-sons, Payne, Parton, R. Todd, J. Todd, Elliot, Barrett, Rugg, Hickson, Woods, Pierce, Docherty, Dando, Speed, Piper, Anderson, Hunt, Massey, Morton, Kimber, Williams, Cowper, Misses McLoghry, Parsons and Gollon (Ellerslie). The prizes were won by Mrs. Pierce (bridge), and Mrs. Piper (''500"). Consolation prizes went to Mrs. Parton and Mrs. Massey (Mangere). Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. George and Miss Patton.

Tlio large reception hall at the Old Parliamentary Building, Wellington, was cljarminglv decorated for the party given on Wednesday afternoon by the wives of Ministers of the Crown, including Lady Sidey, Mesdames Ransom, Voitch, Taverner, Cobbe, Donald, Stalhvorthy, Smith, Murdoch and Masters. Very beautiful spring flowers and foliage were used in the decoration of the room and fables, these having como mainly from the homo of Mrs. Cobbe, at Feilding, showing clearly that the district must he a real "garden" ono. Her Excellency the Lady Bledisloe was a special guest of honour, and was accompanied by Lady Norah Jellicoe and Mrs. A. C. Day. Other guests included the wives of members of the Legislative Council, the House of Representatives, a,nd officials connected with the Parliamentary Buildings. The hostesses received the guest* at the entrance, and a very pleasant sociable time was spent by all.
