STOLEN JEWELLERY.

ALLEGATION BY POLIOE. "DUMPED INTO HARBOUR." CHARGE OF RECEIVING. "When tills man found that the police were after him, he dumped a lot of valuable jewellery, including a ring valued at £2OO, into the harbour," said DetectiveSergeant Kelly in the Police Court yesterday, when Howard Duran, aged 31, second-hand dealer, was charged with the theft of a coffee service and cutlery worth £8 15s, the property of Ellis Charlotte Commons. Mr. Noble, who represented accused, entered a plaa of not guilty and said accused elected to be tried Bummarily. "When » man is a receiver, or 'fence,' for those who steal from houses, he should not be dealt with summarily," Mr. Kelly said. "I will not accept summary jurisdiction and ask for a week's remand so that the case can be dealt with indictably." Mr. Noble took exception to Mr. Kelly's remark that accused had dumped jewellery into the harbour and said there was no proof. A second man, John Andrade, aged 69, dealer, was charged with receiving from Thomas Fen ton a bracelet valued at £5, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Mr.. Dunlop said accused was very well known in Auckland and had an unblemished record. He had been allowed bail after his arrest. Mr. Kelly: Well, he will not get his liberty to-day. He was given it earlier only because he said he had only one bangle, but later we found a lot more." Mr. Kelly showed the magistrate several pieces of Jewellery. Accused was remanded for • week. "Every day we have instances of breaking and entering and theft, and these •would not be half so frequent if it ware not for the receivers," the magistrate said, in refusing bail.
