LOAN INTEREST RATES. KARANGAHAPE ROAD BUS AREA. An appeal to local bodies to reduce rates of interest on loans raised by them was received at a meeting of the City Council last evening from the Municipal Association, which stated that the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, had asked local bodies to fall into line with the banks and other bodies which borrowed from the public. The Finance Committee recommended that the association be advised that the council would be prepared to co-operate as requested. The, Local Government Loans Board having refused to sanction the borrowing of £9300 to reimburse the district fund account for expenses incurred in raising a recent redemption loan, the • Finance Committee reported that, in its opinion, the refusal was illegal. It recommended that a clause be inserted in the Local Legislation Bill of this session authorising the council to borrow the money and use it for the purpose stated. On the recommendation of the chief traffic inspector and the Legal and Bylaws Committee, it jvas decided to reduce the size of the bus stopping area in Karangahape Road, near the • corner of Pitt Street, and to allow only hospital buses to use it. A new stand was appointed for Farmers' Trading Company buses in Pitt Street, in front of the Naval and Family Hotel. The purpose of the changes is to reduce tr.affic congestion. With reference to a petition by 25 residents, asking that tennis courts be laid down in portion of Grey Lynn Park, the city engineer pointed out certain disadvantages of the site and stated that an area at Western Springs large enough for nine courts was being cleared/ It was decided to inform the petitioners accordingly. On the recommendation of the TownPlanning Committee, it was decided to grant a permit to erect shops on the northwest corner of Jessell Street and Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, but not to grant one for a factory at 15, England Street. Ponsonby, for the curing and boiling of hams and butchers' small goods. An application for a permit to erect two shops at the corner of Brighton Road and Eldon Street, Parnell, which was reported upon adversely by the city engineer, was referred to the committee.
