PREVENTION OF FIRE.

EDUCATING THE PUBLIC. SPECIAL WEEK PROPOSED. CITY COUNCIL'S SUPPORT. The special effort, sponsored by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. do la Perrelle, to educate the public in firo prevention, is to be fully supported by the Auckland City Council. At last evening's meeting of tho council a letter was received from the Inspector of Fire Brigades, Mr. R. GirlingButcher, stating that it was proposed to organise a fire prevention and clean-up week in every town in New Zealand jn the early part of tho coming summer and an attempt would also be made to interest the commercial organisations in this and other fire prevention work. He asked if the council was prepared to fall in with the proposal, and if so, whether it is thought the week beginning November 23 would be suitable. In the meantime a series of broadcast talks had been arranged to be given in the four main centres toward the end of September. It was also hoped to arrange for a series of lessons on fire prevention to be given in the schools, and to commence this series in conjunction with the fire prevention week. It was decided to reply that tho council would be glad to co-operate, and the matter was left in tho hands of the Finance Committee. The Otahuhu Borough Council at its meeting last evening also decided to cooperate in the scheme.
