Three human lives were sacrificed at Torquay through an effort to rescue a dog from drowning. The animal had fallen down a slipway into the sea, and its owner, a 16-vear-old girl, tried to save it. She was swept out of her depth. Two men who dashed in after her were carried away also.

Hundreds of .persons were looking on, and many rushed into "the water to form a "human chain." At tho same time ropes were thrown in. Within a minute, however, the three persons and the dog had disappeared beneath giant waves.
