(Received September 2, 1.15 a.m.) BRIGHTON, Sept. 1. : The New Zealand cricketers this morning resumed their match against Sussex 1 at Brighton. When stumps were diawn yesterday the visitors had completed their first innings for 385 runs; and the county had made 549 for nine wickets. On the resumption of play to-day the county captain declared the innings closed with New Zealand behind, and the visitors made 116 for two wickets, f The Sussex batsmen in their first innings yesterday, before 5000 spectators, held complete mastery over the New Zealand attack. After Tate passed his century he hit oven more freely. He lost Bowley shortly after luncheon, the latter being caught by Talbot at mid-on. Tate was out to a fine catch by James, He had batted 203 minutes and hit three sixes and 14 fours:. H>3 had given an excellent display of clean, powerful hitting although he was dropped twice in the slips oS Cromb before he had scored 50. Four wickets were now down for 249. Duleepsinhji and Cook added 139 before Cook was brilliantly caught by James on tho leg side. Duleepsinhji gave a dazzling exhibition of batting for two hours. He hit 10 fours. Another attractive inrings by Langridge completed the day. 05 the final over he obtained his 1000 runs for the season, having secured 100 wickets previously. He was batting 115 minutes and hit nice fours and one six.. The New Zealand bowlers had a difficult task on a perfect wicket. Vivian and Merritt bowled steadily. Apart from the slips' catching the fielding was excellent. Tho weather was again fine when pk.y was continued this morning. Dempster and Mills opened the innings. Dempster was soon bowled by a ball from Tate which turned in sharply. Mills and Blunt batted in their best form, and at luncheon the score was 116 for two wickets, of which Mills had made 64.
