REBELLION IN BURMA.
SITUATION IMPROVING. C REBEL LEADER SENTENCED* (Received September 1, 7.5 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, August 31. Tho India Office in its statement on Burma for tho last week says the situation continues to improve satisfactorily on the whole. In the Thayet-myo district the surrenders now amount to 1476, including three important leaders, who are on the list of those excluded from tho amnesty. Surrenders in tho other districts continue, and the total is now 4671. No serious engagements between tho Government forces £>nd the rebels occurred during the week. Saya San, tho organiser of the Tliarrawaddy rebellion, was convicted and sentenced to death by a special tribunal at, Tharrawaddy on August 23. The Irrawaddy River, in Lower Burma, is falling, and it is hoped that the danger of serious breaches in tiio embankments has passed.
